The Greene County girls track & field team will have at least five events and the boys will have at least four events at the state meet next weekend in Des Moines. First and second place finishers at the meet qualify automatically. The field is filled based on times and distances across the state.
The co-ed Class 2A district meet was held in Manson Thursday.
Seniors Megan Durbin and Lauryn Lyons will cap their high school seasons at the state meet. Durbin won the high jump, clearing the bar at 5’ 5”. She was state champion in that event her sophomore year and runner up her junior year, and she was the champion at the Drake Relays in April. Durbin will also run the 200m dash at the state meet, placing first in the district meet in 26.89 seconds.
Lyons won the shot put with a personal record throw of 35’ 9-1/2”. It will be her first trip to the state meet.
Freshman Brianna Osterson will compete in the long jump, having leaped 16’ 2”, setting a personal record.
Osterson and Durbin, along with freshman Lillian Muir and junior Melanie Doran earned a place in the 4 X 400m relay with a second place finish in a season best time of 4:22.78.
Third place finishes came from Melanie Doran in the 400m hurdles at 1:12.09; the 4 X 200m relay of Doran, Makala Kafer, Osterson and Durbin with a season best time of 1:50.63; the sprint medley relay of Megan Dorn, Muir, Kafer and Osterson with a season best time of 1:57.60; and Muir in the long jump at 15’10”.
Team scores at the district meet were Alta/Aurelia 121, Emmetsburg 111, Southeast Valley 90, Greene County 87, Pocahontas Area 68, Clarion-Goldfield Dows 50, Manson NW Webster 49, Roland-Story 41, Ogden 41, South Central Calhoun 35, South Hamilton 35, and Eagle Grove 15.
On the boys side, sophomore Carter Morton won the high jump at 6’ 2” and the 400m low hurdles with a time of 57.42 seconds. Sophomore Colby Kafer placed second in the long jump at 20; ¾” and in the 200m dash in 23.73 seconds.
The at-large qualifiers will be announced on Friday.
